This popular and historic pub was acquired by its owners in 2009 with a view, initially, to building flats for social housing and then subsequently developing a small housing estate. Local residents opposed these plans from the start.

Planning permission was granted in 2010 after which the site was put up for sale. After many years of inactivity, building work finally started in July 2015. Locally, this was seen as good news. However, the houses have yet to be completed.

The aim of this Blog has been to keep residents informed of current developments and to record the long history of this small community's fight to keep its pub.

Keep on Writing

Some news.  We still haven't heard from the BC in answer to our queries but what we can report is that any letters sent in so far will still count.  We got this from Borough Councillor Richard Oldfield.

However, it looks like the owners are responding with tactics of their own and are getting their pals to write in approving the revisions.  We would urge all those objecting to the plans write in and make it very plain to the planning department that the residents of Rough Close continue to oppose these proposals vehemently.

More when we get it.

  1. So funny! Those folks at 37 Golborn Avenue are drinking buddies of the Davis's!

    They have had to resort to cajoling their friends into approving the plans as no one else will. Hilarious!

Having just spent half an hour trawling through the many new objections to this appalling development we can now see that seemingly the only support that the Destructive Davis`s have for their development comes from their sycophant mates the Harnetts of 55 Blythe avenue and the Redmans of 37 Golborn avenue Meir Heath......its coming to something when you have to stoop so low to get your mates (who don`t even live in Rough Close) to support your plans to destroy its community !!

    PS....Any truth in the rumour that 55 Blythe avenue and 37 Golborn avenue may soon be up for sale because the owners are trying to find a 4 bedroom detached in Rough Close at a knock down price ?

  3. I'm almost (but not quite) ashamed to say that I don't know where Golborne Avenue is. And that says more about the relevance of the views of anyone living there to the George & Dragon than it does about my knowledge of the local area.

    Odd, isn't it, that these correspondents don't give any reasons for approving the application? Of course, as you both point out, this is a question of the owners trying to get some support for their badly thought-out, ill-conceived and very unwelcome plans.

    There continue to be large numbers of objections from people who do live in the area and who will be affected by the development.

    I was particularly impressed by the comments from a resident of Sunningdale View who I thought had got it spot on.

Indeed,Mr Coxons mail as you say does contain some relevant SBC questions.I suppose the core is that seemingly the opportunity to object has been openned and closed so many times it is difficult to undertstand what is happening.I fear that his request for SBC to explain will fall on the same deaf ears as Mr Powers has when asking council employees to respond.....frankly it is like trying to raise the dead !
    On a more positive note no doubt SBC has an array of compliance procedures that they are required to fulfil and it is likely that planning will be one of them.If the developer gets the go ahead the potential of a maladministration appeal to the Local Government Ombudsman may feature in our favour in any appeal to SBC on a negative (to us) decision.
