ABOUT THIS BLOG

This popular and historic pub was acquired by its owners in 2009 with a view, initially, to building flats for social housing and then subsequently developing a small housing estate. Local residents opposed these plans from the start.

Planning permission was granted in 2010 after which the site was put up for sale. After many years of inactivity, building work finally started in July 2015. Locally, this was seen as good news. However, the houses have yet to be completed.

The aim of this Blog has been to keep residents informed of current developments and to record the long history of this small community's fight to keep its pub.

Baffled and Bamboozled?

Anyone reading the new application might be somewhat baffled by some of the statements it contains.  For example, it claims to have followed recommendations made by the local Parish Council.  We had a long chat with Councillor Joy Bennett about this recently.  Councillors did indeed meet with the owners and gave opinions about the proposals.  The only recommendation they made was that the owners should present their intentions to the local community at an open morning (there is an earlier blog post about this).  The owners chose to disregard this recommendation.

Another claim made in the Design Statement (page 7) is that "the new solution is based on general views provided by the community and parish as a whole."  Did they ask your opinion?  We don't know of anyone who has been consulted or provided information to the owners or planners.  If they had taken any notice of local opinion then perhaps they might have given it up as a bad job and looked for somewhere more appropriate to develop their flats.

LET US KNOW WHAT YOU THINK!  LEAVE A COMMENT.

  1. No doubt the developers rather contentious claims on consultation and reacting to the community are their response to the detailed comments posted before when we were asked to give opinion to SBC and this became electronically available.Undoubtedly the current plans are a significant improvement on the earlier ones as far as the impact on our community is concerned and some people may consider that they are acceptable in their current form.
However we should consider that it still involves the demolition of the George and Dragon with a highly debatable set of data in the application showing an economic rationale for its destruction. As so many people said in the previous comments posted....You can not make a profit in a pub that is rarely open.
I for one will be objecting to any developer proposal involving a bulldozer destroying the building.

  2. Drive space for two cars for a five bedroom house?...

OK, will there be a rule to prevent the owners from widening their drives to take more cars? I very much doubt it.

What that diagram should show is at least three maybe four cars on those driveways which means between 24 and 32 more cars driving onto the A520 adding to the traffic on an already dangerous road.

Also, if that access road is unadopted, the dustbin lorry will not go down there. Where is the space to put 16 blue and brown wheely bins? Hope the first house on the left wouldn't mind having them in their front garden...

  3. Thanks for your feedback. Many people seem to be taking the view that "houses are better than flats" and will not be sending in letters of objection. All we can say is that if you do have just cause then write in to the Borough Council and tell them.
